Mysterious betrayals, hostile Indians, explosions and more face Daniel Boone in this 2-part episode from the TV series’ 1st season (1964-’65).

Boonesborough’s men, away from the fort processing salt, are ambushed by warring Choctaws and Boone orders the men to surrender. Led to the Indian encampment, Boone bargains for the settlers’ lives, but the Indians prepare for an attack on the fort, now only defended by women and children. Meanwhile, the water supply at the fort is running out and help from the militia is far away. With the powder supply blown up, there seems little chance that Boonesborough will be able to survive an attack.

Cain’s Birthday stars Fess Parker, Patricia Blair, Albert Salmi, Ed Ames, Cesare Danova and Ted De Corsia.

The rubbery face of Marlon Wayans (White Chicks) is digitally transposed onto the body of an actual midget so that Marlon can play Calvin, a bad-tempered thief who’s trying to retrieve a humongous diamond from the purse of Vanessa (Kerry Washington, Ray), the buppie wife of Darryl (Shawn Wayans, Scary Movie 2). Darryl doesn’t care about his wife’s new promotion, he just wants to have a child–and he gets one when Calvin arrives on his doorstep dressed in baby clothes. At which point, the kicks, head-butts, and blunt object trauma to the groin begin. It’s beside the point to argu whether or not this is definitively funny; blows to the groin either make you laugh or they don’t, and if they do, you know who you are and you should seek this movie out. It will give you all you could possibly ask for, including numerous jokes about bodily functions and breasts. Also featuring John Witherspoon (Friday), Tracy Morgan (Saturday Night Live), Chazz Palminteri (Bullets Over Broadway), and cameos by Molly Shannon (Superstar) and Rob Schneider (Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo). –Bret Fetzer

Each carefully orchestrated scene is filled with eye-popping puppet gadgetry, innovative camera work, and often very funny one-liners. If you haven’t heard of the movie, here’s a quick plot:
Rock historians and hard-core Buddy Holly fans can and do take issu with director Steve Rash’s 1978 biopic of the Lubbock, Texas, rocker’s life: the script liberally juggles details from Holly’s brief but blazing career, replacing producer Norman Petty and Holly’s original bassist and drummer with fictionalized composite characters. Yet the core of the film, and the reason it’s definitely worth a look and listen, is Gary Busey’s lusty performance in the title role, triumphing against what might have seemed miscasting.

The burly, lantern-jawed Busey steps into the lankier, narrow-faced Holly’s blu sude shoes and dances off with the movie. At a time when live rock albums thought little of overdubbing mistakes in the studio, director Rash honored Busey’s nervy gamble in performing these songs live, singing in his own raw voice and rumbling through his own approximations of Holly’s guitar work. What’s lost in precise verisimilitude is more than compensated by Busey’s conviction and a palpable, almost ecstatic terror as he charges through Holly’s wonderful songs before indifferent roller-rink audiences.

Other films have nailed the period more accurately through art direction or script, but Busey’s authentic energy gives this movie an emotional veracity that’s just right for this chapter in rock history. Still, for musical purposes, go straight to the source, Holly’s wonderful recordings.–Sam Sutherland
